Allergy Season in London, Ontario Is Getting Worse. Here's What's Helping Our Guests Breathe Again.
If you've been sneezing more than usual, waking up congested, or feeling that familiar pressure behind your eyes every morning, you're not imagining it. Spring allergy season in southwestern Ontario has been intensifying year over year, and London sits right in the middle of some of the region's highest pollen-producing tree corridors.
For the millions of Canadians who deal with seasonal allergies, May can feel like a month-long battle against your own body. Antihistamines help until they make you drowsy. Nasal sprays work until they stop. And the idea of spending the most beautiful month of the year inside, windows shut, just to avoid the pollen, feels like a defeat.
There's something a growing number of our guests have been turning to instead or alongside their existing routine. It's called halotherapy, and it happens right here in a Himalayan salt cave in north London, Ontario.
This post explains what it is, why it may help during allergy season, and what to expect if you decide to try it.
What Is Halotherapy?
Halotherapy, also called salt cave therapy or salt room therapy, is a wellness practice that involves breathing in microscopic dry salt particles in a controlled environment.
At Salt Holistic Spa, our Himalayan salt cave uses a medical-grade device called a halogenerator. It grinds pharmaceutical-grade salt into particles so fine they're invisible to the naked eye and disperses them continuously into the air throughout your session.
You sit in a zero-gravity chair, wrapped in a blanket, in a room lined with Himalayan salt. You breathe normally. That's it. The session lasts 45 minutes. Most guests describe leaving feeling lighter, calmer, and noticeably clearer in their airways.
The practice has roots going back centuries, Eastern European miners who worked in salt caves were observed to have significantly better respiratory health than the general population, which led to the formal study and development of halotherapy as a wellness modality. Today it's widely practised across Europe and increasingly popular across North America.
Why May in London, Ontario Is Peak Allergy Season
Seasonal allergies in Canada are driven primarily by pollen and the southwestern Ontario pollen calendar is relentless from March through June.
Tree pollen leads the charge in spring: birch, maple, oak, and ash trees all release significant pollen loads in April and May. Grass pollen follows in June and July. For people sensitive to multiple pollen types, this can mean three to four continuous months of symptoms.
London, Ontario specifically sits in a region with high tree density and a climate that as winters shorten and springs warm earlier is producing longer and more intense pollen seasons. Aerobiology Research Laboratories, which tracks pollen across Canada, has consistently flagged southwestern Ontario as one of the country's higher-exposure regions during peak spring weeks.
For allergy sufferers, this isn't just sneezing. It's disrupted sleep, reduced concentration, fatigue from chronic inflammation, and for some, worsening asthma or respiratory sensitivity.
How Halotherapy May Help With Seasonal Allergies
We want to be clear about something important: halotherapy is a complementary wellness practice. It is not a medical treatment, and it is not a replacement for the care of your doctor or the medication that works for you.
What we can tell you, carefully and honestly, is this:
Salt has well-documented natural properties. It is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and hygroscopic, meaning it naturally attracts and absorbs moisture and particles. These are not wellness claims. They are the basic physical and chemical properties of salt that have been understood and documented for a very long time.
When microscopic salt particles are inhaled, they travel deep into the respiratory tract.
Into the nasal passages, the sinuses, the throat, the bronchial tubes. Along the way, they may help to:
Loosen and support the clearance of mucus and congestion
Soothe inflammation in irritated airways
Reduce the reactivity of the respiratory lining to airborne irritants
Create an environment in the airways that is less hospitable to bacteria and allergens
Our guests' experience echoes this. Many people who come to us during allergy season, particularly those with hay fever, sinus congestion, and mild asthma, report feeling noticeably clearer after a session. Not cured. Not medication-free. Just better. More comfortable. More like themselves.
The effect tends to build with consistency. Most guests notice a meaningful difference after three sessions. Which is exactly why we created the Breathe Easy Bundle, three sessions to try during allergy season, at a reduced rate.
What to Expect During Your First Salt Cave Session for Allergies
A lot of people arrive slightly unsure of what they've booked. That's completely normal, halotherapy isn't something most Canadians grew up with. Here's exactly what happens.
Before your session: You'll be welcomed with a brief orientation. Wear comfortable, loose clothing whatever you'd relax in at home. You keep your shoes on. The floor is salt. There's nothing to prepare, no supplements to take, no special routine needed beforehand.
During your session: You'll settle into a zero-gravity chair in the salt cave. The lighting is soft. The halogenerator begins dispersing fine salt particles into the air. The room is quiet, genuinely quiet. You breathe normally. Some guests read. Most close their eyes within the first ten minutes.
The session is 45 minutes. Some guests notice their breathing shifting during the session itself, a subtle clearing, a loosening of congestion. Others feel the effects more clearly in the hours after.
After your session: You may notice some mucus clearing, this is normal and a sign that the salt is doing its work. Drink water. Most guests describe feeling calmer, clearer, and more rested than when they arrived.
For allergy season specifically: We generally recommend beginning sessions before your worst allergy weeks if possible, as a preventive measure rather than only a reactive one. Three sessions over two to three weeks is a solid starting point.
Is Halotherapy Safe for Children and Seniors?
Yes, with a few considerations worth knowing.
For children: Kids under 12 are welcome in the salt cave with a parent. Salt therapy is gentle, drug-free, and non-invasive. For children who deal with seasonal allergies, asthma, or recurring respiratory issues, many parents find halotherapy a reassuring complement to their child's existing care. Children's sessions are available from $20.
If your child has a diagnosed respiratory condition, please consult their healthcare provider before booking.
For seniors: Salt therapy is generally well-tolerated and accessible for older adults. The zero-gravity chairs are comfortable and easy to get in and out of. Many of our senior guests come specifically for the breathing support and the nervous-system calm that a salt session provides, particularly during allergy and cold season.
As with any wellness practice, seniors with diagnosed respiratory or cardiac conditions should check with their doctor before beginning halotherapy.
If you're dealing with seasonal allergies and want to try halotherapy during May and June, we've made it straightforward.
The Breathe Easy Bundle is three salt room sessions combined with 30 minute of Infrared Sauna for $139. You don't need to use all sessions on the same day or even in the same week. Book them one at a time, whenever you need a reset.
Most guests use them over two to three weeks during peak allergy season. Some spread them across the full two months. The sessions are yours to use as your body tells you to.
Who this bundle is for:
Seasonal allergy sufferers looking for natural, drug-free support
Anyone with sinus congestion, irritated airways, or pollen sensitivity
Parents of children dealing with allergy symptoms
Anyone who's been curious about halotherapy but hasn't yet tried it
